From January to February 2022, the electricity consumption of the whole society increased year-on-year, and the electricity consumption of primary industry and residents maintained double-digit growth. The growth rate of the electricity consumption in the nation’s 17 provinces exceeded the national average level. In industrial and manufacturing sectors, the growth rate of the electricity consumption was lower than the average level in the whole society, the electricity consumption in the chemical industry was growing positively, and the electricity consumption in the building materials, ferrous and non-ferrous industries had negative growth.


1. Overall electricity consumption


From January to February the electricity consumption of the whole society reached 1,346.7TWh, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%.


By sectors, from January to February, the electricity consumption of the primary industry was 16.3TWh, a year-on-year increase of 12.8%; the electricity consumption of the secondary industry was 841.3TWh, a year-on-year increase of 3.4%. The electricity consumption of the tertiary industry was 248.8TWh, a year-on-year increase of 7.2% and that of residential was 240.3TWh, a year-on-year increase of 13.1%.

2. Electricity consumption by region


From January to February, the electricity consumption of the Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern China was 600.6TWh, 266.6TWh, 398.6TWh and 80.9TWh respectively, the growth rate of each region was 6.2%, 10.7%, 2.3% and 5.0% respectively.

From January to February, the overall electricity consumption in the nation’s provinces achieved positive growth, except for Yunnan, Tianjin and Inner Mongolia. 


Among the top 5 provinces in terms of the electricity consumption growth, Tibet's growth rate was 25.1% (of which Lhasa increased by 19.5% year-on-year, driving Tibet's electricity consumption growth by 9.5 percentage points). Jiangxi’s electricity consumption growth rate was 16.9% (of which Ganzhou increased by 21.3% year-on-year, driving Jiangxi’s electricity consumption growth by 2.8 percentage points); Hubei’s electricity consumption growth rate was 14.8% (in which Wuhan increased by 17.1% year-on-year, driving Hubei’s electricity consumption growth by 4.6 percentage points); Anhui’s electricity consumption growth rate was 14.5% (in which Hefei increased by 13.5% year-on-year, driving Anhui’s electricity consumption growth by 2.2 percentage points); Zhejiang's electricity consumption growth rate was 11.8% (in which Hangzhou increased by 13.0% year-on-year, driving Zhejiang's electricity consumption growth by 2.3 percentage points).


The growth rate of the electricity consumption of the rest 12 provinces exceeded the national average level, namely: Hainan (10.5%), Jilin (8.6%), Heilongjiang (8.2%), Shanghai (8.2%), Guizhou (8.0%), Jiangsu (7.9%), Shanxi (7.6%), Henan (7.5%), Hebei (7.3%), Sichuan (6.8%), Fujian (6.8%) and Hunan (6.3%).


3. Electricity consumption in industrial and manufacturing sector


From January to February, the industrial electricity consumption nationwide reached 825.7TWh, a year-on-year increase of 3.6%, 22.1 percentage points dropped compared to the growth of the same period last year, accounting for 61.3% of the overall electricity consumption. 


From January to February, the electricity consumption of the manufacturing industry was 611.6TWh, a year-on-year increase of 0.5%, 26.3 percentage points dropped compared to the growth of same period of the previous year. Among them, the electricity consumption of the four energy-intensive industries totaled at 341.6TWh, decreased by 1.4% year-on-year, with the growth rate dropped by 19.7 percentage points from the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the high-tech and equipment manufacturing industry was 127.2TWh, an increase of 3.9% year-on-year, 42.9 percentage points dropped compared with the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of consumer goods manufacturing industry was 75.3TWh, an increase of 0.1% year-on-year, 37.2 percentage points dropped compared to the previous year. The electricity consumption in other manufacturing industries was 67.5TWh, a year-on-year increase of 4.2%, decreased by 25.7 percentage points compared to the previous year.

4. Electricity consumption in energy-intensive industries


From January to February, the electricity consumption of the chemical industry was 86.1TWh, an increase of 4.9% year-on-year, and the growth rate dropped by 9.4 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the building materials industry was 47.8TWh, decreased by 7.0% year-on-year, 46.4 percentage points dropped compared to the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 96.6TWh, a decrease of 5.0% year-on-year, which was 23.8 percentage points lower than the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of non-ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 111.1TWh, dropped by 0.1%, and the growth rate dropped by 12.8 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year.
