from:China Electricity Councildate:2021-12-20

December 14, 2021 /CEC/ - On December 13, 2021, it was learned from the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that China Electricity Council (CEC) has been officially admitted as the Observer Organization of the ‘United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’.

The UNFCCC came into effect in 1994 and currently has 197 contracting Parties. It is the basic framework for international community to cooperate on global climate change issues, and its Conference of the Parties is the largest UN Conference mechanism. To be admitted as the Observer Organization of the UNFCCC is an important way to participate in UN global climate governance. The twenty-sixth Conference of the Parties to the ‘United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’(COP26) was held in Glasgow, UK, in November 2021.

In recent years, CEC has continued to communicate and cooperate with the United Nations and other international organizations and institutions. Many times, CEC sent the delegations to participate in the COP for not only publicizing the green and sustainable development in China's power industry by means of conference speeches, social activities and dissemination of publicity materials but also actively participating in the research and cooperation with relevant overseas institutions. In April 2019, CEC officially applied to the Secretariat to become an Observer Organization. Due to the impact of the epidemic, the COP was postponed to 2021, and the relevant agenda was also delayed to the current Conference in Glasgow. At present, the name and contact information of CEC can be found in the latest Observer Organization List on the official website of COP.

After being qualified as an Observer Organization of the UNFCCC, CEC will be able to participate in future Conferences of the Parties as an independent capacity, and can take the lead in applying for hosting and participating the relevant side Meetings on behalf of China's power industry within the United Nations working system on climate change. As a window of China’s power industry, CEC could take this chance to further improve its ability to participate in global energy governance and international cooperation on climate change.
