On January 5, SHU Yinbiao, Chairman of China Huaneng Group, President of Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE), President of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 13th China-US Green Energy Forum, and gave a keynote report titled Energy Science and Technology Innovation Promotes Green and Low Carbon Development.

SHU Yinbiao pointed out that implementing the global consensus on jointly addressing climate change relies on promoting green and low-carbon transition driven by energy science and technology innovation, with the main direction of efficient development and utilization of clean energy.

In recent years, China has vigorously boosted innovation-driven and green development, and accelerated the construction of a clean energy supply system, which significantly lifted the level of electrification, greatly realized energy saving and carbon reduction, and achieved fruitful results in power technology innovation. In the past 10 years, the proportion of clean energy installed in China has increased from 24% to 44%; the proportion of electricity in end-use energy consumption has grown from 19% to 27%; energy consumption per unit of GDP has dropped by 30%; carbon emission intensity has reduced by 40%, and 86% of coal power units have completed ultra-low emission retrofits. Energy science and technology innovation has witnessed remarkable results in promoting green and low-carbon transition.

SHU Yinbiao pointed out that green low-carbon transition shall take decarbonization, re-electrification, digitization and standardization as the path, featuring safe, clean, economic and high-efficient development, and strengthen science and technology innovation to ensure accessible, affordable and sustainable supply of clean energy.

SHU Yinbiao reckoned that the following nine key technologies, including solar power, wind power, nuclear power, energy storage, hydrogen energy, re-electrification, digitization, CCS, CCUS, and new energy-based power systems, will play a crucial role in driving global green and low-carbon transition in the next 20 years. He advocated that China and the US may strengthen energy science and technology collaboration, play to respective strengths, accelerate breakthroughs in core energy and power technologies, promote the establishment of an international standard system for low-carbon technologies, and conduct joint research and personnel training, and provide scientific and technological support for the global green low-carbon transition.

The forum was held online from January 5 to 6, with on-site meetings in Beijing and Fuzhou. Themed The Road to Clean Energy Development in the Context of Carbon Neutrality, the forum was co-organized by CSEE, US-China Green Energy Council, and the Energy Internet Innovation Research Institute of Tsinghua University. Focusing on hot topics including cutting-edge energy innovation technologies, global green and low-carbon transition, carbon neutrality and energy storage technologies, guests discussed solutions to promoting international cooperation and coordinated development.
