President Xi Inspects China Energy Yulin Chemical Company

On September 13, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Chemical Co., Ltd. under China Energy Investment Corporation during his inspection tour of Yulin City, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. Xi inspected the plant’s central control room, visited its project site, and learned about the comprehensive use of coal. He stressed the importance of continuing to develop the energy sector, saying that otherwise the country’s modernization drive will lack enough support. The development of the coal industry should be transformed and upgraded, following a green and low-carbon path, he noted. Such efforts would be conducive to peaking carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality without straining resources, energy and environmental capacity. “This will help us meet the requirements of building a community with a shared future for humanity and protect our planet Earth well,” he added.

Established in March 2012, Yulin Chemical Co., Ltd. is located where Maowusu Desert meets Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi Province, a locale dubbed China’s “golden triangle” of energy. It has completed a 600,000 tonne per year methanol-to-olefin project and a 1.8 million tonne per year coal-to-methanol project, and established a complete industrial chain involving almost every chemical product from coal to methanol and polyolefin. It has launched the world’s first 50,000 tonne per year polyglycolic acid (PGA) demonstration project, which is under construction. Following the path of green development, the company is actively exploring new models of wastewater, waste salt and exhaust gas treatment, and has taken the lead in domestic coal-to-olefin industry in achieving near-zero wastewater discharge.

As the largest coal chemical producer in China, China Energy is mainly engaged in such businesses as coal-to-oil, coal-to-olefin, coal-to-methanol, coal coking, chlor-alkali chemical, petrochemical products development, sales of petrochemical products, and coal-to-oil chemical engineering. Chemical industry is one of the core business segments of China Energy. After nearly two decades of development, a complete system covering technology research and development, project construction, production and operation, marketing, and sales services has formed. At present, national demonstration projects completed and operated by China Energy include the world’s first million-ton direct coal liquefaction project, the world’s first 600,000 tonne per year coal-to-olefin project, and the world’s largest single plant for producing synthetic oil from coal through indirect liquefaction technologies with an annual capacity of 4 million tonnes.
