On April 10, SHU Yinbiao, Chairman of China Huaneng Group and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended the 6th International CCUS Forum in Beijing and delivered address. Fan Qixiang, Vice President of China Huaneng Group, moderated the opening ceremony.

The theme of this year’s forum is “Highlight Carbon Neutrality Explore Carbon Future”. The forum was guided by the Ministry of Science and Technology and co-sponsored by CTSA-CCUS and China Huaneng Group. Huang Jing, director of Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, and Brad Page, CEO of Global CCS Institute, delivered keynote speeches respectively. Fei Weiyang and Li Can, academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, Li Yang, academician of Chinese Academy of Technology and Frank Morton, head of NCCC, attended the forum.

The forum attracted about 300 domestic and foreign representatives, including industrial experts, delegates from universities and leading enterprises.

In his address, SHU Yinbiao pointed out that China’s targets of carbon peak and carbon neutrality fully demonstrate its firm determination and responsibility as a major country to insist on green and low-carbon development and active responding to climate changes. To achieve these targets, energy and power industry shall assume the main role. CCUS technology will not only help promote zero carbon emission of fossil energy in the future, but facilitate building the new-type electricity system with renewable energy as the main body and foster new growth points for green economy.

However, large-scale commercial application of CCUS is facing considerable challenges including high costs and high energy consumption. In this regard, SHU Yinbiao put forward three suggestions:

Firstly, make concerted efforts to accelerate researches on key CCUS technologies and strive to achieve greater breakthroughs in the first-generation low-carbon and low-cost CCUS technology and carbon negative technology.

Secondly, make concerted efforts to promote CCUS demonstration. Support enterprises to launch large-scale and full-process integrated demonstration projects and tackle technical problems through engineering demonstration to enhance market competitiveness of CCUS.

Thirdly, make concerted efforts to establish green financial system. Improve CCUS emission reduction pricing mechanism and speed up forming a virtuous circle featuring increased investment and financing and decreased costs.

SHU Yinbiao said that China Huaneng stands ready to work with all parties to consult in-depth cooperation and exchanges in the low-carbon field leveraging CTSA-CCUS. China Huaneng strives to promote common development and prosperity of all countries in the world and make greater contributions to the building of a community with shared future for mankind.

At the meeting, Glencore Carbon Transportation and Storage Company signed an agreement with China Huaneng Clean Energy Research Institute for a 110,000-ton-per-year carbon capture project. China Huaneng Clean Energy Research Institute is responsible for project designing, manufacturing, equipment supplying and product debugging. It is the first time for China’s carbon capture technology with proprietary intellectual property rights to be exported to developed countries.

About the China Technology Strategic Alliance for CO2 Capture, Utilization and Storage Technology Innovation (CTSA-CCUS)

CTSA-CCUS, established in 2013, is an industrial alliance organization promoted and founded by the Department of Science and Technology for Social Development of Ministry of Science and Technology. It is composed by 4 chairman enterprises including CHNG, CNPC, SINOPEC and CEIC and 29 members including SXYCPC, China United Coalbed Methane Co., Ltd., Tsinghua University, Peking University and Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. The alliance aims to combine long-term and orderly alliance mechanism with requirements of climate change and industrial development to integrate and coordinate R&D and industrial resources. Vigorously promote China’s CCUS technology innovation and project demonstration and rapidly lift the overall technology level. Give full play to the key role of CCUS technology in ensuring energy conservation, emission reduction and coping with climate change.
