CSG & EDL Sign Shareholders Agreement for Laos-China Railway;

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Laotian President Bounnhang Vorachit were in attendance at a recent signing ceremony between China Southern Power Grid (CSG) and Électricité du Laos (EDL) here in the Great Hall of the People.

Mr. Meng Zhenping, Board Chairman of CSG and Mr. Boun Oum Syvanpheng, Managing Director of EDL were in the Press Room within the Great Hall to ink an important shareholder’s agreement between CSG and EDL on the Power Supply Project for the Laos-China Railway.

These important bilateral trade and economic cooperation projects are part of the China-Laos Railway, a key cooperation project which maximizes infrastructure connectivity as part of the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The China-Laos Railway is slated for completion and open for business customers and leisure travelers in December 2021. The external power supply project for the Laos section of the railway, a key supporting element for the entire construction project, is a highlight for both governments.

Since the signing of the memorandum of understanding on the power supply for the Laotian section of the China-Laos Railway between China Southern Power CSG and Électricité du Laos in August 2018, both sides have been dedicated to the professional construction and opening of this vital rail project.

As the first BOT project by China Southern Power Grid in the Lancang-Mekong countries, the external power supply project is a prerequisite for the China-Laos Railway to be opened on schedule.

With the project slated to begin by the close of 2019, 10 new traction substations will be built and connected to the power grid in Laos; 268 km of 115-kV transmission lines will be newly built; and 10 transmission line bays will be upgraded.

All construction is scheduled for completion and put into operation by the end of March 2021.

The project plays a significant role in promoting infrastructure connectivity as well as trade and economic cooperation between Laos and China.
