CGN Shows Efforts for Nuclear Safety

On March 10, 2014, China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) Chairman He Yu in an media interview said the Chinese nuclear companies have always taken nuclear safety as the first social responsibility as the nuclear safety is the lifeline of such companies. He added that, while ensuring safe operation of nuclear power plants, effective measures are taken for prevention against any accident, highlighting the nature of nuclear power as a safe energy.

The Daya Bay nuclear power plant is the first large commercial nuclear power plant in China that went into commercial operation in 1994, said He Yu. According to He Yu, for over 20 years in Daya Bay nuclear power base CGN has always adhered to the safety culture requirements, which are now well observed in Ningde NPP in Fujian, Hongyanhe NPP in Liaoning, Fangchenggang NPP in Guangxi, etc.

He Yu said, CGN has planned 94 improvements for the nuclear power plants in operation and under construction respectively, 42 of which were completed by the end of 2013. Such improvements will further add to capabilities of the units in response to severe accidents.

For better nuclear power safety and reliability, in 2013 CGN and CNNC jointly developed ACC1000, a China-designed nuclear power technology, which benefits the three decades of expertise of China in nuclear power engineering & design, construction and operation while considering the features of advanced technologies like AP1000 and EPR. The ACC1000 features advanced & mature technology, balance of safety and economy and combination of passive and non-passive safety systems, which its technical indicators in line with the latest global safety requirements and the US & European technical standards for the third-generation nuclear power technology.
