Third Lancang-Mekong Power Utility Summit Held in Bangkok

On May 25 and 26, the 3rd Lancang-Mekong Power Utility Summit was held in Bangkok, Thailand under the theme of “the Development of Power Generation and Power Grid: Future Trends and Challenges". The CSG delegation led by Vice President Wang Liangyou attended the Summit during which Wang paid visits to Dr. Areepong Bhoocha-oom, Permanent Secretary of Thai Ministry of Energy, and Ning Fukui, Chinese ambassador to Thailand, exchanging ideas and conducting discussions on topics like further strengthening Sino-Thai cooperation on electric power.

At the summit, Deputy Governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Suthon Boonprasong gave the welcome address. Chun Piseth, Director of Corporate Planning & Project Department of Electricité du Cambodge (EDC), Wang Liangyou, Vice President of CSG, Sisavath Thiravong, CEO of Electricite du Laos (EDL), and Ding Quang Tri, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Electricity Vietnam (EVN) respectively delivered their keynote speeches.

In his speech, Wang Liangyou reviewed the outcomes of previous summits, briefed the latest information about CSG, in particular its cost-effective and efficient technologies and facilities adopted to guarantee the electricity supply in the rural areas, and called on electric power companies in countries along the Lancang-Mekong River to promote the interconnection of power grid networks across the region, so as to regulate the surplus and deficiency in electricity supply. He stated that electric power cooperation is an important component of the Lancang-Mekong cooperation. CSG is willing to provide technical support for other countries and share management experience with them to help develop their electric power, in a bid to further facilitate the social and economic development in this region.

The summit reached a consensus that the 4th Lancang-Mekong Power Utility Summit will be held in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, in May 2017.

After the summit, Wang Liangyou met with Seubphong Buranasirin, Sisavath Thiravong and Ding Quang Trito, and exchanged views on topics including enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation on electric power.

(Additional Report) The mechanism of Technical Working Group established at the Second Lancang-Mekong Power Utility Summit helped to deliver more fruitful and pragmatic results from this year’s Summit. Before this summit, the Technical Working Group convened a meeting where the representatives from various participant countries discussed the development trend and common challenges under the summit’s theme in terms of three aspects, namely power generation, power transmission grid, and power system operation and dispatch. Through the in-depth exchange, representatives jointly put forward relevant suggestions and submitted Working Group meeting minutes for the endorsement of the leadership of the electric power enterprises from various participant countries.
