Hengqin, Zhuhai, China - It’s up and running!

The newly operational China Southern Power Grid New Energy Research Center, based here, has a specific mission emphasis for:

·Development of new energy resources, especially offshore wind power scale access

·Creating common key technology research and development

·Development of core operation control equipment and systems

·Establishment of new energy grid-connections and operations, and

·Maintenance of standard electrical systems that support new energy barrier-free consumption and stable grid operations

New Energy Scale Development

The goal of senior managers of the new China Southern Power Grid Research Center is to seek out new energy resources that can replace traditional fossil-fuel based energy while simultaneously increasing the proportion of electric energy in energy consumption which is the general trend of China's energy pattern development.

This large-scale development and access of new energy sources, such as offshore wind power, is the substantial opportunity for electric grid companies to accelerate the transition to smart grid operators, energy industry value chain integrators and energy ecosystem service providers and harness the resources needed to meet the new challenges to the safe and stable operation of power grids.

New energy sources, including offshore wind power, have not yet matured as a reliable energy resource but is still an important element of a unified grid-connected specification, lacking corresponding testing and testing methods and platforms. There are also problems of the passive adaptation of power grids.

“We’ve found that there is also a ‘gap’ in the efficient operation and maintenance technology of offshore wind power under complex environmental conditions," according to Mr. Sheng Chao, director of the offshore wind power business department of the center’s energy technology company.

Mr. Sheng said, “new energy sources such as offshore wind power have characteristics of volatility and irregularity. After large-scale access to the power grid, it will have a significant impact on the safe and stable operation of the power grid. There is currently no technology available for managing the large-scale fluctuations in new energy and complex large-scale grid interaction and stability control.”

In addition, Mr. Sheng said that, “offshore wind power requires contiguous development, investment entities are dispersed and access to the grid is difficult to co-ordinate. New energy resources and power generation system information lacks a unified source and interface specification, and new energy and energy storage technologies are rapidly changing. It is urgent to establish an effective technology research and innovation platform.”

Mr. Sheng said that in order to seize the commanding heights of offshore wind power technology and support the high-quality development of new energy sources such as offshore wind energy and solar energy, China Southern Power Grid senior managers have studied the favorable opportunities for the large-scale development of offshore wind power in Guangdong and is setting new energy research and test base construction tasks.

Focus on Offshore Wind Power

The main physical construction of the Research Center is in its facility at Hengqin, Zhuhai, and will use the offshore wind turbines of the Guishan Wind Farm to build a grid-connected laboratory located on the Zhuhai Triangle Island which will rely on the operational management of the Electric Power Research Institute of Guangdong Power Grid Corporation.

Specifically, the responsibilities of the China Southern Power Grid New Energy Research Center spans a variety of new energy sources such as wind, solar, storage and ocean energy; focusing on offshore wind power and building a series of research and development platforms for new energy simulation, detection, and control.

In the field of new energy, especially offshore wind power, senior managers of the Research Center have employed and are nurturing a group of scientific and technological innovation strategic talents and high-level innovation teams who all hold a global perspective for the international community.

Plans call for the China Southern Power Grid New Energy Research Center to be “plugged into” into the national key energy laboratory which include the National Wind Energy Technology Center (NWTC) and the German Wind Energy Research Institute (DEWI-OCC), to build a national key laboratory to help build the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Bay Area. International Center for Science and Technology Innovation.

As part of ongoing research and development, the China Southern Power Grid New Energy Research Center will combine the development timing of Guangdong offshore wind power, safety and stability controls and market operation technology for new energy grid connections which will utilize offshore wind power grid-connected technology and equipment integration, new energy grid-connected detection and operation, new energy and flexible resources.

Four aspects of coordinated operation and comprehensive utilization of new energy resources data include:

Main Support

The main emphasis of the China Southern Power Grid New Energy Research Center is in the construction of its facility in Hengqin, Zhuhai, using the Guishan Wind Farm to build a grid-connected laboratory on the Zhuhai Triangle Island and relying on the operation management of the Electric Power Research Institute of Guangdong Power Grid Corporation.

Research Objects

The R & D emphasis will cover a variety of new energy sources such as wind, light, storage, and ocean energy with an emphasis on offshore wind power.

Construction Goals

Establishment of a key national laboratory to help Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and the Dawan District build an international science and technology innovation center.

Research Platform

The Research Center’s five aspects of new energy grid-connected safety and stability control and market operation technology are:

·Offshore wind power grid-connected technology and equipment integration

·New energy grid-connected detection and operation and maintenance

·Coordinated operation of new energy and flexible resources, and

·Comprehensive utilization of new energy resources data to carry out research and development
