World’s Largest “Sky Eye” Completed under Excellent Power Supply Service

“Lines and devices checked. Everything goes well. And power supply is well-prepared.” The “Sky Eye” (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope) Service Team, consisting of 8 members from different power supply departments, gathered on the hoisting site 2 days in advance and has finished checking 2 lines and 189 associated apparatus.

On the morning of July 3, under steady orders, the hoisting device carried the last unit of the reflector of the telescope into precise position, which completed the world’s largest single-aperture telescope—Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope.

Upon completion, the device can be used to explore the origin of the universe and the structure of interstellar matter, detect faint pulsars and other radio sources, and boost the search for extraterrestrial life.

The reflector is an essential part of the project, which is mainly used to gather radio waves for the feed source receiver. With an area of 250 thousand square meters, it is made of 4,450 units. To finish the installation it needs joint hoisting by two transfer trucks and two half-span cables, which has a high demand for power supply.

The installation of the final part of the reflector draws wide attention from the media. To ensure power supply during the task, the “Sky Eye” Service Team of Pingtang Power Supply Company inspected in advance the lines and devices, and eliminated defects through live-line working. The team tracked and monitored promptly on the site temperatures of the splices of the distribution equipment and the transformer’s load, as well as assigned generator vans on standby. It has won the project constructor’s recognition for excellent power supply service.
