China’s Largest Coal-fired Power CCUS Demonstration Project Breaks Ground

The carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology research and demonstration project with a designed annual capacity of 500,000 tons per year, launched by China Energy Jiangsu Branch, broke ground in its Taizhou company on March 22. The project has been listed as a key technical research project under the National Development and Reform Commission of China, a major scientific and technological demonstration project for “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” of Jiangsu Province, and one of China Energy’s top 10 research projects in 2021. When completed, it will be China’s largest coal-fired power CCUS demonstration project.

The project is based on the Taizhou company’s 1GW ultra-supercritical and double-reheating coal-fired generators, and uses advanced chemical absorption technology to independently develop new-generation absorbents that feature high capacity, low energy consumption, and long life cycle. It innovatively integrates various kinds of new technologies, equipment, and materials. Through coupling large-scale optimized carbon capture system with the power plant’s heating system, it will radically solve problems concerning carbon emission reduction in large coal-fired power plants. When completed, it will capture over 90% of carbon emissions, with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons. The electricity needed to capture each ton of carbon dioxide will be less than 90kWh, and energy needed less than 2.4GJ, with overall index reaching the world-leading level. The 1 million-ton CCUS project provides a model of low-carbon transformation for other coal-fired power plants to emulate.
