Three Gorges Project posts sound performance in Q1 2020-1

The Three Gorges Project posted sound performance in the first quarter of 2020 as the mega engineering facility improved shipping productivity, power generation and water resource utilization, contributing to economic and social development.

The Three Gorges Reservoir recorded an accumulative total of 54.835 billion cubic meters of water inflow in the first quarter of 2020, 59.3 percent higher than the estimated amount and 34.5 percent above the historical average.

In addition, it replenished a total of 9.55 billion cubic meters of water over 79 days downstream, helping boost water supplies for spring agricultural activities, industries and households along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

The Three Gorges ship lock operated more than 2200 times, shipping 29 million tons of goods, down 14.41 percent year-on-year due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The Three Gorges shiplift halted operations from January 3 for fire safety improvements, and was suspended from January 27 due to the outbreak of the epidemic. Work has resumed progressively since March 25.
