Baihetan sets new record for concrete placement-1

Baihetan Hydropower Station, built and owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), has set a new record for the placement of high-velocity flood discharging tunnels with plain concrete.

The placement commenced on May 16, when workers poured the first bin of concrete in the flood discharging tunnel, revealing the overall construction of the curved dropped-outlet bottom panel.

A flood discharging tunnel is a kind of hydraulic structure used for discharging excess water from a hydropower plant. Baihetan Hydropower Station has three flood discharging tunnels, making them the world’s largest zero-pressure flood discharging tunnel group.

Each tunnel consists of an intake tower, zero-pressure tunnel body (including the top flat section and a dropped outlet), as well as a flip bucket and ventilation system.

The three tunnels boast a maximum discharge rate of 12,000 m3/s and hold the world record for single-side discharge volume. At top speed, it takes just 18 minutes to fill the entire West Lake, a famous lake in China.
