CTG celebrates the return of the first medical aid team sent to Pakistan’s Karot project

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) held a ceremony to celebrate the return of the medical aid team sent to Pakistan’s Karot project in Wuhan City, Hubei province on November 2. Moin ul Haque, Pakistani Ambassador to China, attended the event.

In 2020, the Karot project, which was at its peak of construction, was severely challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to ensure the health and safety of over 4,000 Chinese and Pakistani builders, the First People’s Hospital of Yichang in Hubei Province, at CTG's invitation, sent 3 medical teams of 15 workers to the project for pandemic prevention and control as well as medical services.

The Karot hydropower station in Pakistan, funded and constructed by CTG, is the first such project written into the joint statement of Chinese and Pakistani governments under the witness of their leaders. It is also the first large-scale hydropower project constructed under the Belt and Road Initiative, and is listed as a priority energy project in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. With a planned installed capacity of 720,000 kilowatts, the station will annually generate approximately 3.2 billion kWh of clean electricity upon completion, meeting the demand of about 5 million people in Pakistan. Meanwhile, it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.5 million tons per year, making an important contribution to increasing the share of clean energy and optimizing the energy structure of the country.

With the joint efforts of CTG and the medical team, the construction of the project has progressed steadily, having completed 90% of the workload so far. As the dam is about to complete concrete placement, it will begin impoundment by the end of this year.
