All of the 82 Units of the Four Cascade Hydropower Stations on the Main streams of the Yangtze River Operated at Full Capacity for the First Time in 2018

from:China Three Gorges Corporationdate:2018-08-14

On July 18, the four cascade hydropower stations on the main streams of the Yangtze River (the Three Gorges project, Gezhouba, Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations) operated at full capacity for the first time in 2018, generating a total of 42.8 million KW of electricity.

Since the beginning of the flood season, in order to meet the increased power demand during hot summer days, China Yangtze Power has worked closely with power grids and flood control and operation departments to ensure that the reservoirs would operate at full capacity as soon as relevant requirements are met. The total rainfall for the season at the upper reaches of Yangtze River has far exceeded record readings over the same period of previous years, leading to abundant inflows to the Three Gorges and Xiluodu Reservoirs. On July 5, the No.1 Flood of the Yangtze River arrived at the Three Gorges Reservoir, followed by the No.2 Flood on July 13. The reservoirs’ capacity of storing flood water and reducing peak flows has helped prevent flooding across the Yangtze River basin and consequently avoid losses of lives and properties.
