CTG commissions 100th generator in its Yangtze River cascade hydropower stations-1

Baihetan hydropower station, owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), put its No.4 generator into operation on November 19, the 6th power unit the world’s second largest hydropower plant commissioned so far and the 100th hydraulic generator commissioned by CTG along the mainstream of the Yangtze River.

To date, 86 of the world’s 127 hydraulic generators with a capacity of over 700,000 kilowatts are owned and managed by CTG. The company is the only hydropower operator with the capability and experience of operating and managing 10-million-kilowatt-level cascade stations. It has also set the world record for most hydropower generating units managed per capita.

Baihetan hydropower station is designed to install a total of 16 1-GW hydraulic generators. Its first generators went into operation on June 28, which are operating smoothly so far.

CTG's journey of having 100 power units built and commissioned as well as creating the world's largest clean energy corridor began in the 1980s.

In December 1988, Gezhouba hydropower station, armed with 22 generators totaling a capacity of 2.715 million kilowatts, completed construction and commenced operation.

In July 2012, Three Gorges power station, with 34 power units totaling 22.5 million kilowatts in capacity, was completed and put into operation.

In June 2014, Xiluodu hydropower station, with 18 generators and a total installed capacity of 13.86 million kilowatts, went into operation. In July 2014, Xiangjiaba hydropower station was completed and put into operation, with 8 power units totaling a capacity of 6.4 million kilowatts.

With an installed capacity of 10.2 million kilowatts, Wudongde hydropower station had all of its 12 generators commissioned on June 16, 2021.

With an installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, Baihetan hydropower station is expected to have all of its power units commissioned by July 2022.

CTG respects and protects the nature, prioritizing environmental conservation and green development in its planning, design, construction and full-lifecycle operation of clean energy projects. Its key cascade stations deliver wide-ranging benefits such as flood control, power generation, navigation, water replenishment and ecological conservation.

As of October, CTG's cascade stations along the Yangtze River Basin had cumulatively produced nearly 2.8 trillion kWh of clean electricity, equivalent to saving more than 861 million tons of standard coal, and reducing emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide by over 2.3 billion tons, 559,500 tons and 532,300 tons respectively.

As of November 19, CTG has reached 102 million kilowatts in total installed capacity with 98 million kilowatts being clean energy, or 96% of the total.
