There is always a river in many people’s memories of their hometowns - indeed, our planet is dotted with "mother rivers” that bring life to villages, towns and cities. In China, the Yangtze River is known as the "Mother River.”

Yangtze River originates in the Tibetan Plateau and runs across central China from west to east, flowing through 11 provinces and cities before reaching the East China Sea in Shanghai. With a basin area of 1.8 million square kilometers, the 6,387km-long river is the world’s third longest river after the Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America.

To protect the Mother River, China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) is committed to ecological restoration and environmental protection in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. CTG fulfills this commitment by carrying out projects focused on water treatment, drinking water source protection and shoreline restoration along the river’s mainstream and its tributaries.

For urban sewage management, CTG is striving to achieve the full collection and treatment of sewage, thereby helping to restore the beauty and cleanliness of the many urban rivers and lakes of the Yangtze River’s mainstream and tributaries.

An example of a successful water source protection project in the cities along the Yangtze River, is the CTG-built emergency water source project in Jiujiang, Jiangxi, which meets the city's emergency water supply needs. CTG is also building a water control project in Liu'an, Anhui, to create a corridor for the urban water ecosystem, has renovated the reservoirs in Zhuji, Zhejiang, and implemented sewage interception and treatment measures with the aim of improving drinking water quality and ensuring water security.

CTG is also working with local governments to accelerate the ecological restoration of the Yangtze River shoreline, which contributes to the quality of life of people living in the area. It has constructed several ecological parks in cities along the Yangtze River, and what was once a malodorous body of water is now a beautiful urban eco-park.
