CTG’s education sponsorship program bags national livelihood award

Three Gorges Education Sponsorship program, a leading public welfare education project launched by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), won a major award for its achievements in the people’s livelihood areas, the second year in a row that CTG took home the same laurel for its charitable initiatives.

CTG’s education program was presented the 2019 People's Livelihood Demonstration Project Award at the 7th China People's Livelihood Development Forum and 13th China International Public Welfare Forum held by People’s Daily on December 28, beating out hundreds of other competing projects. CTG’s Three Gorges Seed Fund won the same award in 2018.

The education initiative is part of CTG’ efforts to explore new ways of offering targeted education assistance, and help people in the Jinsha River reservoir area prevent the inter-generational transmission of poverty.

The Education Sponsorship program is composed of four specific projects, namely, the Three Gorges Scholarship Program, the Three Gorges BanBanTong (High-quality Resources For Every Class), the Three Gorges Inspiration Classes and the Three Gorges Candlelight Operation.

Initially planned in 2017, the sponsorship program was piloted in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province in 2018, and was later rolled out in more than 30 counties in the lower reaches of Jinsha River reservoir area in 2019.

By the end of 2019, the program had donated more than RMB42.19 million and 367 sets of teaching devices, supported a total of 12,534 students from colleges and secondary schools and 221 volunteer teachers, and set up 12 Three Gorges Inspiration Classes, benefiting more than 42,500 students from impoverished families.
