From January to April 2022, the nation’s electricity consumption of the whole society increased year-on-year, and the growth rate of the electricity consumption in the primary industry and that of residential was higher than the national average. 27 provinces nationwide achieved positive growth in the electricity consumption in the whole society. In industrial and manufacturing sectors, the growth rate of the electricity consumption was lower than the national average. The electricity consumption of the chemical and non-ferrous metal industries had a positive growth, while the electricity consumption of the building materials and ferrous metal industries had a negative growth.


1. Overall electricity consumption


From January to Aril, the electricity consumption of the whole society reached 2,680.9TWh, a year-on-year increase of 3.4%, while in April, the electricity consumption of the whole society was 636.2 TWh, a year-on-year decrease of 1.3%.


By sectors, from January to April, the electricity consumption of the primary industry was 31.9TWh, a year-on-year increase of 10.8%; the electricity consumption of the secondary industry was 1,770.4TWh, a year-on-year increase of 1.9%. The electricity consumption of the tertiary industry was 453.1TWh, a year-on-year increase of 3.1% and that of the residential was 425.4TWh, a year-on-year increase of 10.5%.

In April, the growth rate of the electricity consumption in the primary, secondary and tertiary industries was 5.6%, -1.4% and -6.8% respectively. The growth rate of the residential electricity consumption increased by 5.5% year-on-year.


2. Electricity consumption by region


From January to April, the electricity consumption of the Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern China was 1,215.8TWh, 514.6TWh, 797.4TWh and 153.1TWh respectively, the growth rate of each region was 2.4%, 7.4%, 3.0% and 1.4% respectively.


In April, the growth rate of the electricity consumption of the Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern China were -4.4%, 2.0%, 2.4% and -5.9% respectively.

From January to April, except for Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangxi and Liaoning, the electricity consumption in other provinces achieved positive growth, and the growth rate of the electricity consumption in 17 provinces exceeded the national average. Among the top five provinces with the highest growth of the electricity consumption, the growth rate of Tibet was 19.0% (of which Lhasa increased by 15.2% year-on-year, driving Tibet's electricity consumption growth by 7.1 percentage points). Jiangxi’s electricity consumption growth rate was 10.6% (of which Ganzhou increased by 14.5% year-on-year, driving Jiangxi’s electricity consumption growth by 1.9 percentage points); Hubei’s electricity consumption growth rate was 9.4% (of which Wuhan increased by 9.7% year-on-year, driving Hubei’s electricity consumption growth by 2.6 percentage points). Anhui’s electricity consumption growth rate was 9.3% (of which Hefei increased by 8.6% year-on-year, driving Anhui’s electricity consumption growth by 1.4 percentage points). Sichuan’s electricity consumption growth rate was 7.8% (of which Chengdu increased by 9.7% year-on-year, driving Sichuan’s electricity consumption growth by 2.0 percentage points). 


In addition to the aforementioned provinces, there were 12 provinces whose electricity consumption growth rate exceeded the national average, followed by: Hainan (7.4%), Zhejiang (6.8%), Hunan (6.8%), Qinghai (6.5%), Heilongjiang (6.3%), Shanxi (5.9%), Beijing (5.2%), Fujian (5.2%), Ningxia (5.1%), Henan (4.7%), Chongqing (4.6%) and Guizhou (3.8%).


In April, the growth rates of the electricity consumption of the 17 provinces exceeded the national average, namely: Tibet (12.7%), Sichuan (7.9%), Qinghai (6.0%), Ningxia (5.9%), Yunnan (4.4%), Jiangxi (4.2%), Beijing (4.2%), Shanxi (3.4%), Hubei (3.2%), Inner Mongolia (2.8%), Shaanxi (2.3%), Anhui (1.9%), Heilongjiang (1.8%), Fujian (1.6%), Chongqing (1.3%), Henan (1.3%), and Guizhou (0.2%). 


3. Electricity consumption in industrial and manufacturing sector


From January to April, the industrial electricity consumption nationwide reached 1,740.0TWh, a year-on-year increase of 2.0%, accounting for 64.9% of the overall electricity consumption. In April, the industrial electricity consumption nationwide reached 439.5TWh, a year-on-year decrease of 1.2%, accounting for 69.1% of the overall electricity consumption. 


From January to April, the electricity consumption of the manufacturing industries nationwide was 1,314.6TWh, a year-on-year increase of 1.1%, while the electricity consumption of the four energy-intensive industries totaled 728.2TWh, increased by 0.3% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of the high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries was 273.6TWh, an increase of 2.0% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of consumer goods manufacturing industry was 166.5TWh, an increase of 0.5% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of other manufacturing industries was 146.2TWh, a year-on-year increase of 4.0%. 


In April, the electricity consumption of the manufacturing industries nationwide was 342.4TWh, a year-on-year decrease of 2.2%. The average daily electricity consumption of the manufacturing industries was 11.41TWh/day, a decrease of 0.06TWh/day over the same period of the previous year, while the electricity consumption of the four energy-intensive industries totaled 191.6TWh, decreased by 0.2% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of the high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries was 69.7TWh, a decrease of 5.5% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of consumer goods manufacturing industry was 43.8TWh, a decrease of 5.4% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of other manufacturing industries was 37.3TWh, a year-on-year decrease of 1.8%.

4. Electricity consumption in energy-intensive industries


From January to April, the electricity consumption of the chemical industry was 176.9TWh, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%. The electricity consumption of the building materials industry was 115.1TWh, decreased by 3.2% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of the ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 208.1TWh, a year-on-year decrease of 2.7%. The electricity consumption of non-ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 228.2TWh, a year-on-year increase of 1.6%.


In April, the electricity consumption of the chemical industry was 44.3TWh, an increase of 5.6% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of the building materials industry was 35.1TWh, decreased by 7.2% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of the ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 54.1TWh, a decrease by 2.5% year-on-year. The electricity consumption of non-ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 58.0TWh, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%.
