Longyuan Power Signs Its First Grassland Carbon Sequestration Project

from:China Energy Investment Corporationdate:2022-09-26

On September 19, Longyuan Power Carbon Assets Co., Ltd. under China Energy signed a cooperation agreement with Gangcha County on developing a grassland carbon sequestration project, the first of its kind ever launched by China Energy.

Grasslands are the second largest carbon pool after forests in China, which have a great potential to develop. A grassland carbon sequestration project aims to strengthen the grassland’s carbon fixation capacity mainly through grass planting, rotatory grazing, deserted grassland restoration and re-planting, and other measures. According to relevant emission reduction approaches and argumentation procedures, it can calculate carbon credits that are tradable both at home and abroad. Gangcha County, located in the north shore of Qinghai Lake and at the south foot of Qilian Mountains, is under paired assistance from China Energy. The county is also an important water conservation area and nature reserve around Qinghai Lake and abounds in grass resources. The company fully taps the potential of the grassland carbon sequestration project and expands professional skills. It has preliminarily selected 64,000 hectares of grassland for the carbon sequestration project, which is estimated to sequestrate about 90,000 tons of carbon emissions. The benefits from the project can be further expanded to the entire grassland under the county’s jurisdiction, achieve positive circle of ecological improvement and governance results, and boost the region’s ecological progress and rural revitalization.

Relying on forest and grassland carbon sequestration projects, Longyuan Power has constantly expand its service scope in carbon assets. With innovative concepts, it has built a carbon sequestration product development system and integrated carbon sequestration into the overall ecological conservation and restoration of “mountains, rivers, forests, farmland, lakes, grasslands, and deserts.” Moreover, it adopts a market-oriented approach to realizing the value of ecological products, further boosting the region’s green, low-carbon and high-quality development.
