National Key Research Project “Large-scale Wind/Solar Complementary Hydrogen Production Key Technology Research and Demonstration” Passed State-level Acceptance Inspection

On December 25, the High Technology Center of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology held a conference to evaluate the overall performance of the national key research project “Large-scale Wind/Solar Complementary Hydrogen Production Key Technology Research and Demonstration”, which was launched under the leadership of CHN Energy. The expert team listened to the report delivered by the head of the project, watched a video presentation, and reviewed relevant documents and materials. Upon inquiry and discussion, they concluded that the project completed all tasks specified in the research plan with a high standard and achieved the preset goals and evaluation indexes, and agreed that it passed the acceptance inspection.

Spearheaded by CHN Energy, the project was implemented from 2019 to 2022. It consisted of five research topics, which were undertaken by Tongji University, China Electric Power Research Institute, Suzhou Jing Li Hydrogen Equipment Co., Ltd., and National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) and Guohua Energy Investment Co., Ltd. (“Guohua Investment” for short) under CHN Energy, respectively. Besides, Guodian Power and Guohua Investment launched pilot application projects in Zhangjiakou City to serve a green Winter Olympics. After three years of efforts, the research team of the project has made breakthroughs in several key technologies such as wide-fluctuation electrolysis hydrogen production, low-voltage high-current DC conversion, rapid hydrogenation, and multi-energy monitoring and protection. They have also developed a series of important equipment including the largest single electrolytic tank capable of producing hydrogen at a rate of 1,200 Nm3/h, the world’s most powerful 5.7MW DC-DC hydrogeneration power source, and China’s first 70MPa mobile hydrogen filling station. It also built the country’s first hydrogen production, storage, filling and transport integrated monitoring platform and the world’s largest 8MW wind-solar coupled renewable energy hydrogen production and filling demonstration project, creating wind-solar coupled hydrogen production technology system that covers the entire industrial chain, ranging from system optimization and assembly, key equipment design and manufacturing, and full-link comprehensive monitoring and safety protection. The implementation of the project guaranteed green hydrogen supply for the Beijing Winter Olympics. For this reason, it received a thank-you letter from the National Development and Reform Commission and the municipal government of Zhangjiakou.

The project applied for 64 invention patents, participated in the formulation of four national standards and one industry or regional standard, authorized three software copyrights, and published 53 academic papers. In addition, it developed a number of technologies that it owns independent intellectual property rights, and cultivated many professionals in the field of hydrogen energy. The research outcomes of the project are crucial for further promoting wind/solar renewable energy hydrogeneration, advancing the large-scale assimilation of new energy, and accelerating the realization of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
